Jeepneys are known to be culturally significant in the Philippines, which is why to a lot of Filipinos, it is a good representation of Filipino creativity and identity. Through murals and signages it left a cultural mark to the everyday lives of Filipino commuters, that even the placards itself developed its own identity in its typography and colors. This can also be observed in the survey we conducted as it is overwhelmingly agreed upon by our respondents that the traditional Jeepney placards create a sense of familiarity and nostalgia to them.
In terms of design, this is where things become tricky and uncertain, as evidently shown by the response of our respondents. There wasn’t any concrete agreement as to whether it is easy to see and understand Jeepney placards from a distance, as well as to which style of typography is easier to read. This is where the flexibility of these signages become apparent as it starts to affect the purpose it’s meant to serve. Instead of seeing the effectiveness in its readability, the respondents expressed an inconclusive stance in its design.
When asked directly in an interview setting, the word “nakasanayan”
constantly reoccurs from our interviewees. This cultural attitude of settling to
what is given has created a false sense of perception that the Jeepney placards
are effective. It should be effective since it “has been” working for decades,
but that is not what the perception of Jeepney commuters have shown.
